Don’t Make These 5 Website Redesign Mistakes

A complete website redesign can be an exciting process for any business. After all, website improvements can be huge milestones for businesses.  But too often, we find business owners that come to us after being burned by another agency or developer. Unhappy with the recent work done to their website, we come to the rescue and try to salvage their online presence.

We find that much of that disappointment and loss of investment (of time and money) can be prevented. If you are considering getting a new website for your business avoid these 5 website redesign mistakes:

1. Forgetting to identify who exactly will be involved in the process.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “too many chefs in the kitchen?”

Before embarking on the website redesign process, make sure to identify a close-knit group that will be the decision-makers working independently from other teams within your company. Identifying one point of contact can prevent miscommunication, delays in production, and confusion surrounding the direction of work. Ideally your web design agency or developer should be working directly with the business owner and a marketing director or coordinator.

2. Having unrealistic goals.

Thinking a free website from a friend is going to meet your expectations is unrealistic. For a premium website, don’t trust unreasonably low prices or outlandish promises like top rankings in SEO. One of the most common issues clients have usually has to do with the timeline of production. Either clients aren’t provided a clear timeline before beginning a website redesign or clients want the process rushed. We offer our clients outlines for them to understand the scope of work and how long it takes. Make sure your agency or developer can do the same – you should be able to hold them accountable based on a reasonable metric and that’s it.

3. Not taking advantage of a Content Management System (CMS).

If you are having a website developed without a CMS, run. Now!  A CMS makes it easier for writing and publishing content, making changes to design, and more. Not to mention it offers legitimate SEO tools to keep your website ranking high – the right way. At 852 Creative Marketing & Design, we use WordPress as our CMS of choice. We use WordPress because it is one of the most widely used CMS’s in the world with the most constant updates. Some of the most notable brands like Google, New York Times and Disney all use WordPress as their CMS.

4. Failing to evaluate your current/previous website.

Even if your current website is terrible, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel completely. Before beginning your redesign, evaluate your current website to find any salvageable copy, images or themes. Identifying strengths and weaknesses can also help make a better website this time around. Putting together a list of these can help your agency or developer deliver a better product.

5. Not having a strategy.

The ultimate goal for every business is to increase sales or customer acquisition. Developing a website without strategy on how to do so can be your most costly mistake. Your website should clearly communicate what your brand, what your business does, and it’s history of success. What many overlook is that it should also function as a means of building connections and relationships. The best way to do this is to make sure each page in your website has a purpose. One of this pages should be dedicated to accepting visitor information like name and email, so you can contact them in the future. We can’t tell you how many times people forget contact forms!

These are just a few mistakes you can make during a website redesign. The best advice we can give to businesses is to do their research. Take your time to select who will do your website redesign so you can work with someone your comfortable with and have an end product that meets your expectations.
